Reading your result — and why it matters for a flooring side gig
The result is total square feet and how many boxes to buy. If you install flooring for pay, this number is your material quote: order the boxes, add your labour, and keep a few spare from the same dye lot for future repairs. A later batch rarely matches, so buy the margin up front rather than guessing.

How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?
Plan 10% extra for a simple rectangular room, and 15% if the space has many cuts, a diagonal layout, or an irregular shape. That margin covers mistakes and lets you replace a damaged plank later from the same dye lot — a later batch often won't match.
Do I need underlayment?
For laminate and many vinyl planks, underlayment cushions sound, smooth minor subfloor flaws and adds a moisture barrier. Some products come pre-attached; if yours doesn't, budget for it separately — it's a real per-square-foot cost, not optional padding.
